Points

to include in your letters to your representatives requesting impeachment

Who?

Impeach the following members of the Bush Administration:

  • President George W. Bush
  • Vice President Dick Cheney
  • Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice

How?

  • All points will be covered by individual citizens choosing topics most important to them. Choose those most important to you.
  • Research, reframe, and reword to most accurately reflect your opinion and understanding of events.

Why?

Lying

-         These members of the Bush Administration made fraudulent claims to Congress and to the American people saying that they had evidence that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction. This claim has been widely shown to have been false.

-         The Bush Administration made public statements that clearly linked Al Queda and Saddam Hussein in the minds of the public, even when no evidence for ties between the two existed, and they were well aware of this lack of evidence.

-         Congress approved the war on Iraq on the basis of fraudulent information provide by the Bush Administration.  While this has been since shown to be the case, the administration continues to push for greater numbers of troops in Iraq, for additional spending, and has stated their interests in possibly attacking yet another country, Iran.  The legislative branch must take seriously their duty to “check” the actions of the executive branch.

 Spying

-         President Bush authorized warrantless wiretaps on American citizens and legal residents, in clear violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) protecting the privacy of individuals.

-         Violation of FISA is a felony, and it is the role of the Congress and Senate to hold the President accountable to the law.

-         The backpedaling of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales in an attempt to bring the actions of the executive branch in to compliance with the law well after the fact is clearly insufficient and signals the need for an independent, comprehensive investigation.

 Torture

-         Members of the Bush Administration authorized the use of torture, in obvious violation of the Geneva Convention banning torture of prisoners of war.

-         The resignation of former Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld is insufficient.  The perpetrators of torture—at all levels of government—must be brought to justice.

-         When President Bush signed the bill to outlaw torture in late 2006, he then issued a “signing statement” claiming he reserved the right to supersede the law at his discretion. This is a flagrant disregard for the rule of law, placing his opinion above all other government institutions, rendering the checks and balances system inherent to the United States Government obsolete.

Re: Impeach the Bush Administration

Dear [_____________]:

I am writing today to respectfully request that you, as my representative in the federal government, take immediate and decisive actions to impeach President George W. Bush, Vice President Richard Cheney, and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.  These individuals are guilty of conspiracy to defraud the United States , in essence, tricking our nation into an illegal war with devastating consequences in terms of human lives, relationships with international governments, and the moral fabric of our country.

This situation has become so dire that organizations working for impeachment are cropping up across the country, massive protests have and will continue to happen, and several books have been published explicitly detailing the many reasons why the American people have a case for impeachment, and moreover, indictment on the grounds of fraud.  Former federal prosecutor Elizabeth de la Vega’s book “ United States vs. George W. Bush et. al.” is just one example.

Please understand how important this matter is to me and my community.  I would appreciate an immediate response, assurance that you are taking this matter very seriously, and for this issue to be addressed on your website so that I and others in your district can stay informed.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

(Be sure to include your address so representative can determine you are a constituent.)
